Characteristics of box-type substation

A box-type substation (also known as a box transformer or ZBW-type box transformer) is an integrated and prefabricated complete set of power equipment, widely used in urban power grids, new energy power stations, industrial zones, and infrastructure projects. Its main features are as follows:

  • Integrated and modular design: High-voltage switchgear, transformers, low-voltage power distribution units, metering systems, and auxiliary facilities are concentrated within one or multiple enclosed cabinets, enabling factory prefabrication, integrated transportation, and rapid installation, thereby significantly reducing the construction period.
  • Compact structure and small footprint: suitable for urban areas or outdoor locations where land is scarce, eliminating the need for a dedicated power distribution room and saving on construction costs.
  • High power supply reliability: The adoption of fully sealed and fully insulated structures effectively prevents external environmental impacts and reduces the failure rate. Some products are explosion-proof, fire-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, adapting to harsh operating environments.
  • Flexible wiring methods and customized solutions: It can be configured with various operation modes such as single ring network, dual ring network, and terminal power supply, meeting different load demands. It also supports landscape-style and compact designs, blending seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
  • High level of intelligence: Mid-to-high-end products generally integrate intelligent monitoring units such as SCADA, DTU/FTU, and support the "four remotes" function (remote measurement, remote signaling, remote control, and remote adjustment), facilitating remote management and automated control.
  • High protection level: The enclosure protection level is typically not lower than IP23D, and can reach IP44 or above for outdoor use, providing excellent dust and water resistance.
  • The trend towards energy conservation and environmental protection is evident: low-loss transformers with energy efficiency ratings of S13, SCB14, and above are widely adopted, and the use of dry-type transformers is increasing, reducing the risk of oil pollution and aligning with the direction of green power grid development.

In addition, box-type substations are widely used in new energy projects such as photovoltaic and wind farms, and have become the preferred distribution solution due to their strong environmental adaptability and convenient installation.
