What is a Wind Power Box-Type Substation?

2026-06-11

Wind Power Box-Type Substation (referred to as Wind Power box transformer) is a compact power conversion device specifically designed for wind farms. Its core function is to step up the low-voltage power generated by Wind Power to high-voltage power that can be received by the grid. It integrates protection, monitoring, and distribution functions, making it a key hub for grid-connected wind power generation.

  1. Core functions and positioning

The core task of the Wind Power Box transformer is to provide on-site voltage boosting and power conversion support for Wind Power:

  • Step-up conversion: The voltage of the electric energy generated by Wind Power is usually 0.6-0.69 kV, which cannot be directly connected to the high-voltage power grid. The Wind Power transformer box uses an internal transformer to step up the voltage to 10 kV or 35 kV, meeting the requirements for long-distance transmission in the power grid.
  • System protection: Equipped with built-in high-voltage fuses, lightning arresters, circuit breakers, and other devices, it can cut off the current in case of lightning strikes, short circuits, and other faults, protecting the power generation equipment and grid safety.
  • Intelligent monitoring: Equipped with sensors and remote control systems, it monitors parameters such as voltage, current, and power in real time, and supports fault warnings and operation and maintenance responses.
  1. Structural design and type characteristics

The Wind Power box transformer adopts a modular integrated design, which is mainly divided into two categories:

European-style box transformer (mainstream type):

  • Sub-compartment structure: The high-voltage room, transformer room, and low-voltage room are independently separated, ensuring good heat dissipation and ample maintenance space.
  • Protection capability: The fully enclosed metal casing boasts a protection level of IP23 or higher, offering resistance to wind and sand, salt spray, and moisture. It is suitable for harsh environments such as seaside areas and Gobi deserts.

American-style box transformer:

  • Compact integration: The high-voltage equipment and transformer share the same oil tank, resulting in a small volume (approximately 1/3 of the European type), making it suitable for space-constrained scenarios, but with weaker scalability and heat dissipation capabilities.

Typical configuration:

  • High-voltage unit: load switch, fuse assembly, lightning arrester.
  • Transformer: oil-immersed or dry-type step-up transformer (e.g., a 5MW wind turbine equipped with a 5500kVA transformer).
  • Low-voltage unit: intelligent circuit breaker, electric energy metering device
  1. Application advantages in wind farms

Strong adaptability:

  • With a wide temperature tolerance range from -45℃ to 45℃, it can be deployed in complex environments such as high altitudes, coastal areas, and deserts.
  • The modular design facilitates phased construction and supports flexible expansion of wind farms.

Efficient and reliable:

  • The factory prefabricates the production, and on-site installation only takes a few days, significantly shortening the construction period (more than 60% faster than traditional civil construction substations).
  • Reduce cable length, lower transmission loss, and enhance power generation efficiency.

Intelligent operation and maintenance:

  • Remote monitoring and fault diagnosis are achieved through Internet of Things (IoT) technology, reducing the need for manual inspections, especially for wind farms in remote areas.
  1. Difference from ordinary box-type substation

The Wind Power box transformer has undergone special optimization tailored to the characteristics of wind power generation:

  • Anti-vibration design: Strengthen the structure to withstand continuous vibration during fan operation.
  • Customized voltage matching: Directly compatible with Wind Poweroutput voltage (0.69kV), no additional conversion equipment required.
  • Sand and dust proof sealing: Utilizing special sealing materials and an independent cooling system to prevent sand and dust from infiltrating and affecting the lifespan of the equipment.
  1. Future technology trends
  • Large capacity: The capacity of a single transformer has exceeded 2000kVA, supporting fans with higher power (such as 16MW offshore fans).
  • Environmentally friendly materials: Promote the use of fluorine-free refrigerants and recyclable box materials to reduce carbon emissions throughout the entire life cycle.
  • Digital twin application: Combine AI algorithms to predict equipment failures and achieve preventive maintenance.

Through highly integrated and scenario-based design, wind power box transformers have solved the voltage conversion and stable transmission issues in the "last mile" of wind power grid integration, becoming an indispensable "power heart" for modern wind farms. Their technological evolution will continue to drive cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and intelligent development of wind power.
