What type of container should be used for transporting high and low voltage equipment?

2026-06-18

High and low voltage equipment (such as large transformers and switchgear) is primarily transported in specialized containers such as open-top containers, frame containers, and platform containers, to accommodate the equipment's overweight, over-width, and over-height, as well as to meet rain and dust prevention requirements.

Common container types and applicable scenarios

Open-top container: The top can be opened, suitable for equipment with a height exceeding the standard container (2.59m), which can be loaded and unloaded from the top by crane or forklift, used for high and low voltage distribution cabinets, small transformers, etc.

Frame container: Without side panels or with detachable side panels, it has strong load-bearing capacity and is suitable for ultra-wide and ultra-heavy switch cabinets and large transformers, facilitating easy bundling and fixation.

Platform container: It only has a bottom plate and is used for oversized equipment with a length or width exceeding the conventional frame container, such as the core or winding components of ultra-high voltage transformers.

Standard dry bulk container: Suitable for high and low voltage components with small volume and moderate weight (such as circuit breakers), but shockproof pads and waterproof linings need to be added.

Why do we need special container types?

core restriction

specific requirements

corresponding box type

Exceeded size limit

Some equipment, with a height >2.6m or width >2.4m, cannot be loaded into standard containers

Open-top container, frame container

Excessive weight

Individual equipment can weigh tens or even hundreds of tons, and the load-bearing capacity of standard container flooring is limited

Frame box, platform box

rainproof and dustproof

High and low voltage insulation components are sensitive to moisture and require sealing to prevent rain

Open-top container (with tarpaulin), frame container (with cover)

fixed requirement

Fragile components such as internal cables and porcelain bushings require multiple points of fastening to prevent displacement during transportation

Frame box (with side columns that can be tied)

Typical case: Practice of special equipment transportation

Million-volt high-voltage transformer: The ultra-high-voltage transformer produced by XD Xibian of China Electric Equipment Group is 18.8 meters high and weighs 499 tons. It is usually transported using detachable frame flatbed trucks (non-standard containers) or customized frame containers, and assembled on site after being transported in separate parts. The weight and size of such equipment far exceed the limits of ordinary containers, requiring specially designed load-bearing structures.

Energy storage cabinet equipment: Although energy storage cabinets do not belong to the main high and low voltage Power Distribution Equipment, they contain a large number of high-voltage battery modules and inverters. When handling, container jacking systems and wheeled carriers (which can be attached to the bottom corner fittings of the container) are often used, reflecting the dependence of special container types on fixing and lifting interfaces.

Transportation precautions

  • Center of gravity offset correction: Due to the uneven distribution of components inside high and low voltage equipment, the center of gravity needs to be calibrated using load calculation software after packing, and counterweights may be added if necessary.

Shockproof packaging: Shock-absorbing rubber pads are laid at the bottom of the box, and porcelain insulators are wrapped in foam sheaths to avoid damage from transportation resonance.

Temperature and humidity monitoring: Some precision measuring equipment requires a humidity level of ≤60% during transportation. A temperature and humidity recorder should be placed inside the box and coordinated with the ventilation opening of the tarpaulin for open-top boxes.

Regulatory compliance: The transportation of oversized equipment requires prior declaration of an "Oversized Transportation Vehicle Pass", and must be conducted according to the specified route and time period, with a warning vehicle guiding the way.
